Cold process soap making
We prepare the herbs first, often infusing
them in oil for up to a month. The ingredients are then carefully
measured and the base oils are mixed together. All our soap bases
are made with olive oil, palm oil and coconut oil.
Other oils we may incorporate include avocado oil, sweet almond oil,
borage oil, calendula oil, chamomile oil, hemp seed oil and neem oil.
Some oils, like coconut, palm, neem oil and cocoa butter need to be
gently heated to make them liquid. Lye is then added to start the
process and the mixture is whisked rapidly as the oils quickly change
their composition to become salts – the soap.
Once the mixture has become as thick as custard
it is ready to pour. At this stage we add the essential oils and
any ground herbs so that they remain as unaltered as possible while
the mixture is still a little alkaline. We finally pour the soap
into trays and incubate them under blankets, while the soap gels
and sets and the pH balances.
When the soap has set we remove the soap
bars from the tray and dry them on shelves to finish curing, before
finally being packaged.
